On July 4, 1776, the Declaration of Independence was issued granting all 13 American colonies their independence from Great Britain. These American colonies were a part of the English, then British Empire, from 1607 to 1783.
By declaring themselves an independent nation, these American colonists were able to initiate an official alliance with France. They, in turn, received French assistance in the subsequent American Revolutionary War, or the American War of Independence, against Great Britain.
